Landing late at Phuket Airport: picking up a rental car at night

Why late arrivals need a little planning

A lot of long-haul and regional flights land at Phuket in the evening, and some arrive well after midnight. The rental desks in the Domestic Terminal don't all keep the same hours, so a booking that works perfectly for a 3 p.m. arrival can leave you standing at a closed counter at 1 a.m.

None of this is complicated. You just need to match your arrival time to the right company, give them your flight number, and know the phone number to call if things slip. This guide walks through it.

Desk hours at Phuket Airport

These are the hours the companies publish for their Phuket Airport desks. Hours change with the season, so treat this as a starting point and confirm in your offer's conditions.

CompanyPublished hoursLate-arrival note
SixtDaily 07:00 – 00:00The latest-closing brand desk in our list
NationalDaily 07:00 – 22:00No after-hours returns
Thai Rent a CarDaily 07:00 – 22:00A late car is held for about an hour within opening hours
AvisDaily 07:00 – 21:00Returns during office hours unless a key drop is agreed

Companies that meet you in the arrivals hall with a name sign, rather than at a fixed desk, often time the hand-over to your flight. Check the "pick-up instructions" in your voucher – it tells you whether to go to a counter or look for a person.

You can look up any company's desk, hours and phone number with the desk finder on our Phuket Airport guide.

Always add your flight number

This is the single most useful thing you can do. With a flight number the supplier can see your real arrival time and knows to wait if the plane is late. Without it, a car booked for 22:00 may be released to someone else if you haven't appeared an hour later – Thai Rent a Car, for example, holds a late car for around one hour within opening hours.

Put the flight number in the booking form. If you only find out about a delay at the gate, call the number on your voucher before you board or as soon as you land.

Out-of-hours fees

Some companies will hand over a car outside their normal hours if you arrange it in advance. When they do, they usually charge an out-of-hours fee because a staff member has to come back to the airport. It is a separate charge from the deposit and the rental price, and it is listed in the rental conditions.

If your flight is scheduled to land after a desk closes, either choose a company whose hours cover your arrival or confirm the out-of-hours arrangement in writing before you travel. Turning up and hoping is the expensive option.

If nobody is at the desk

  1. Don't leave the arrivals hall straight away. Meet-and-greet staff sometimes wait near the exit doors rather than at the counter.
  2. Call the number on your voucher. Save it in your phone before you fly – roaming or an eSIM that works on landing helps a lot.
  3. Contact the booking support line if the supplier doesn't answer. Keep your booking reference ready.
  4. Take a photo of the closed desk with the time visible. If you have to take a taxi and come back in the morning, it supports any claim later.

Getting to your hotel without the car

If you decide it is simpler to collect the car the next morning, the airport is well served at night:

  • Airport taxi counters in the arrivals area of both terminals generally run around the clock. Recent reported fares are roughly THB 500–600 to Phuket Town, THB 700–800 to Patong and THB 900–1,000 to Kata & Karon, and some counters add a late-night surcharge.
  • Grab works at HKT from a marked pick-up area outside the terminal. Late at night there are fewer drivers, so prices can be higher than at the taxi counter.
  • Pre-booked transfers are worth it if you are travelling with children or a lot of luggage – someone is waiting with a sign.

You can then change your pick-up time to the next morning. Do it through your booking, not just by telling the desk, so the change is on record.

Driving at night after a long flight

Phuket's roads are quieter after 10 p.m., but they are also darker, and there are more scooters without lights than you might expect. A few things make the first drive easier:

  • Set your hotel in the phone's map app while you still have airport Wi-Fi.
  • Ask the staff to show you the headlights, wipers and indicator – they are on the opposite side to European cars in many models.
  • Take Route 402 south; it is a wide, well-lit dual carriageway for most of the way. Patong Hill is steep and winding, so take it slowly.
  • If you are exhausted after a long-haul flight, a taxi tonight and the car tomorrow is a perfectly sensible choice.

Early-morning returns

The same logic applies at the other end of the trip. If your flight leaves at 06:00 you will be returning the car before most desks open. Ask at pick-up whether the company has a key drop, where it is, and what condition report they use. With a key drop you normally stay responsible for the car until staff check it in, so photograph it carefully in the return bay, including the fuel gauge and mileage. Among the brands we list, Sixt publishes the latest hours at its Phuket Airport desk (07:00–00:00). National and Thai Rent a Car publish 07:00–22:00 and Avis 07:00–21:00. Always check your offer's conditions for current hours.

If you gave your flight number, the supplier can see the delay and may wait or arrange an out-of-hours hand-over. Call the number on your voucher as soon as you can.

Some companies charge an out-of-hours fee for pick-ups or returns outside their desk hours. It is listed separately in the rental conditions.

Usually yes, if you change the pick-up time through your booking. You may lose the first day if you change it on the day, so do it as early as possible.

Yes. The official taxi counters in arrivals generally operate around the clock, and Grab also picks up from a marked area outside the terminal.

Only if the company offers a key drop or an agreed out-of-hours return. Ask at pick-up, and photograph the car and fuel gauge when you leave it.
