Airport guide & rental desks

Phuket International Airport (HKT): where to find your rental desk

Phuket International Airport is one of Thailand's busiest airports and the main gateway to Phuket and the Andaman coast. It sits at the far north of the island, next to Mai Khao and Nai Yang beaches, about 32 km from Phuket Town. Most rental desks are in the Domestic Terminal arrivals hall – if you land on an international flight, it is a short walk next door.

Local driving tips

Drive Phuket like a local

Practical tips from our location guides – the things rental desks rarely tell you.

All local tips
Roads 01

Use U-turn slots, not right turns

On divided roads such as Route 402 you often cannot turn right. Drive past your turning and use the next marked U-turn gap.

Roads 02

Low gear on the hills

The roads over Patong Hill and up to the Big Buddha are steep and twisty. Use a low gear going down instead of riding the brakes.

Roads 03

Patong works as a one-way loop

Beach Road and Rat-U-Thit Road run in opposite directions. Missing your turn often means going round the loop again – set your GPS before you drive in.

Parking 04

Red-and-white kerbs mean no parking

Park only where the kerb is unpainted or in paid lots. Parking on red-and-white kerbs can get your car clamped or towed.

Parking 05

You cannot drive to Railay

Railay is only reached by boat. Park in Ao Nang or at Ao Nam Mao pier and take a long-tail boat across.

Ferries 06

Ask before taking a rental car on a ferry

Many rental companies do not allow their cars on ferries, or their insurance does not cover it. Check your terms before you drive to Donsak.

Driving in Thailand

Six rules to know before you leave HKT

Thailand drives on the left. These are the rules visitors most often get wrong.

Full driving guide
Drive on the left

Rental cars are right-hand drive. Take extra care at junctions and roundabouts.

Towns: around 80 km/h

Common limit in Phuket municipal areas – often lower on small streets. Follow signs.

Highways: 90 km/h

Up to 120 km/h only on specially marked highway sections.

0.05% alcohol limit

Stricter 0.02% for drivers under 20 and provisional licence holders.

Seatbelts for everyone

Required in the front and the back. No hand-held phones while driving.

Help

Questions about renting at Phuket Airport

All FAQs

Most desks are in the arrivals hall of the Domestic Terminal. From International arrivals, walk 3–5 minutes along the covered walkway. Some local firms meet you in arrivals with a name sign – your voucher says which.

Yes, in most cases. A licence from outside ASEAN should be accompanied by an International Driving Permit (1949 Geneva Convention type). Suppliers and the police can ask for it.

Usually 21, with a young-driver fee under 25. Some suppliers rent certain cars from 18, while vans and luxury cars often need drivers aged 25+.

Rarely. Almost every supplier blocks the security deposit on a credit card in the main driver's name. Check the conditions in your search results before you book.

It depends on the supplier and the car group, and it usually matches the insurance excess. The exact amount is shown in the rental conditions before you book.

Yes, with the larger suppliers. A one-way fee usually applies and is shown in the price.

Usually not. Most suppliers forbid ferry crossings or their insurance does not cover them. Rent a separate car on Koh Samui instead.

Add your flight number when you book so the supplier can track your arrival. If you will arrive after the desk closes, call the number on your voucher.

Main roads are good, but expect scooters on both sides, steep hills and U-turn slots instead of right turns. Read our local tips before you go.

In the rainy season – especially September and October. December to February and Chinese New Year are the most expensive times to rent.
