How to find a cheap car rental at Phuket Airport

Cheap rate or cheap rental?

Search results are sorted by daily price, and it's tempting to click the first one. But the number that matters is what the whole trip costs you – rental, fees, fuel, cover and anything taken from the deposit. A rate that is THB 80 a day cheaper can easily end up more expensive once a big excess, a short fuel policy or a desk fee is added.

Here is how to compare properly.

Compare the total, not the daily rate

For each offer you are considering, look at:

  • The total price for your dates, including taxes and any one-way fee.
  • The excess – how much you would pay if the car is damaged. A low price with a THB 20,000 excess is a different deal from a slightly higher price with THB 5,000.
  • The deposit and whether your card can take it.
  • The fuel policy – full-to-full is usually the fairest.
  • Mileage – unlimited on most offers, but check for a long road trip.
  • Where you collect the car – a desk in the terminal, or a meet-and-greet or shuttle to an off-site office.

Our search shows these in the rental conditions of each offer before you pay.

Book early for the busy dates

Demand at Phuket peaks from mid-December to February, around Chinese New Year and at Songkran in April. Cars – especially automatic SUVs, 7-seaters and vans – sell out, and prices rise as they do. If your dates fall in those periods, booking several weeks ahead usually gives you more choice and better rates. Many offers have free cancellation up to a deadline, so you can book early and still change plans; the deadline is shown before you book.

Outside the peak, prices are often more relaxed, but we don't promise a "cheapest month" – rates depend on demand for your exact dates, so a quick live search is the only reliable answer.

Pick the smallest car that fits

An economy or compact car is cheaper to rent, cheaper to fuel and much easier to park in Patong or the old town. If you are four adults with big suitcases, though, squeezing into a small car is a false saving – use the "Which car fits your group?" tool on our car types page to check seats and luggage space.

Rent for longer, pay less per day

Daily rates usually drop for weekly rentals, and again for a month or more. If you are on the island for nine days, compare a 7-day and a 9-day search – sometimes the longer rental costs almost the same. For stays of four weeks or more, see monthly car rental.

The extras that add up

  • Young-driver fee – usually for drivers under 25.
  • Additional driver – a daily fee for each extra named driver. Only add the people who will really drive.
  • Child seats – charged per day; for a long rental, bringing your own can be cheaper.
  • GPS – rarely needed. A local SIM or eSIM with offline maps works well.
  • Out-of-hours pick-up or return – avoidable if you choose a company whose desk hours match your flights. See Landing late at Phuket Airport: picking up a rental car at night.
  • One-way fee – worth it for a road trip, but compare against returning to HKT.

Cover: buy it once, not twice

Reducing the excess gives peace of mind on Phuket's hills, but there's no point paying for it twice. Decide before you arrive whether you'll take full protection when you book, the supplier's own cover at the desk, or cover from your travel insurance or credit card. Each works differently with the deposit – Car hire insurance in Thailand explained compares them.

Small habits that save money

  • Return the car full on full-to-full rentals. Refuelling charges are far above pump prices.
  • Pay in baht. If the card machine offers your home currency, choose THB instead – the terminal's exchange rate is usually worse than your bank's.
  • Return on time. Many companies charge a full extra day once you are more than an hour late.
  • Photograph the car at pick-up and return so you're never charged for damage that was already there. Our Rental car pick-up and return checklist for Phuket Airport covers what to check.

Is renting at the airport more expensive?

Not necessarily. Phuket Airport has the widest choice of companies on the island, which keeps prices competitive, and you avoid a taxi to your hotel – THB 700–800 to Patong at the official counter. Some local companies offer lower rates with a meet-and-greet or a short shuttle to an office near the airport; that can be good value, as long as you are comfortable with how the hand-over works.
