What is long-term car rental?

Long-term car rental covers stays of two months or more. It is the simplest option for people relocating to Phuket, working on the island for a season or spending the whole winter here: no car purchase, no registration, no resale at the end.

Because the car is the supplier's, they handle maintenance, tax and insurance. You pay the rental, fuel and any extras. For stays of several months, ask about splitting the booking into monthly periods – some suppliers prefer it.

Why choose it

No ownership riskNo buying, registering or selling a car in Thailand.
Servicing handledThe supplier arranges maintenance and repairs.
Best daily ratesThe longer you rent, the lower the daily price tends to be.
Change carsSome suppliers can swap your car if your needs change.

Tips before you book

Tip

Residents need a Thai licence

If you become a resident, a foreign licence and IDP may no longer be enough – check the current rules for your situation.

Tip

Consider full cover

Over several months small scrapes add up. Reducing the excess to zero is often worth it.

Tip

Rainy-season tyres

If you rent through May–October, check the tyres have good tread – roads get very wet.

Tip

Keep every receipt

Fuel, tolls and service visits: keep receipts until the deposit is released.
