Phuket Airport at a glance
Phuket International Airport (HKT) sits at the far northern tip of the island, next to Mai Khao and Nai Yang beaches and close to the Sarasin Bridge to the mainland. Most hotels, however, are on the west coast and in the south – Patong, Kata, Karon, Rawai – so the drive back to the airport is the longest journey many visitors make on Phuket.
The good news: almost every route uses the same main road, Route 402 (Thepkasattri Road), which is a wide dual carriageway for most of its length. The less good news: it is also the road everyone else uses, and a few junctions on it are reliably slow at the wrong time of day. This guide gives you realistic times, explains where delays happen and shows how to plan the return of your rental car so you reach check-in relaxed.

These are door-to-airport times for a normal rental car, not the optimistic figures a map app shows at 3 a.m. Every destination has its own route page under driving times from Phuket Airport, with directions and stops.
When should you leave?
Use this simple formula:
Drive time + 30 minutes for the car return + the airline's check-in advice
Airlines usually ask you to be at the airport 3 hours before an international flight and 2 hours before a domestic flight. Here are worked examples for a 2 p.m. international departure:
- From Patong: 50 min drive + 25 min traffic buffer + 30 min return + 3 h = leave around 9:15 a.m.
- From Kata or Karon: 60 min + 25 min + 30 min + 3 h = leave around 9:00 a.m.
- From Bang Tao: 25 min + 15 min + 30 min + 3 h = leave around 10:10 a.m.
In high season (December to February) and around Chinese New Year and Songkran, add another 15–30 minutes: the airport road, the rental return area and the security lines are all busier.
The route explained
From the west coast (Patong, Kata, Karon): cross Patong Hill on Route 4029 to Kathu, join Route 402 at the Darasamuth junction near Central Phuket, then drive north through Thalang. Patong Hill is steep and winding – take it slowly, especially in rain or behind trucks.
From Bang Tao, Surin and Kamala: the coastal roads lead to Cherng Talay and Route 402 at the Heroines Monument area. Some drivers prefer the quieter road north via Bang Tao and the Laguna area; both are fine.
From Phuket Town, Chalong and Rawai: head north on Route 402 (Thepkasattri Road) all the way. From Rawai and Chalong, allow extra time for the Chalong circle and the roads around Phuket Town.
From Khao Lak or the mainland: follow Route 4 south to the Sarasin Bridge – the airport turn-off is only around 15 minutes after you reach the island.
Near the airport, leave Route 402 at the signed airport junction and follow the airport road west. The signs for "Car Rental Return" appear before the terminal approach.
Where the traffic builds up
- Central Phuket / Darasamuth junction (Kathu) – the slowest point on the island on weekday afternoons and at weekends, when shoppers head for the malls.
- Heroines Monument roundabout in Thalang – busy at school times, around 7–8 a.m. and 3–5 p.m.
- Patong Hill (Route 4029) – slow behind trucks and tour buses, and slower still in heavy rain.
- Chalong circle – the bottleneck for anyone driving up from Rawai, Kata or Karon via the south.
- Phuket Town ring roads – busy during the morning and evening commute.
If your flight leaves between 5 and 9 p.m., treat the evening rush as certain and add at least 30 minutes. A live traffic layer on your map app is the best final check before you set off.
Fuel before you return the car
Most rentals are full-to-full: you received a full tank and must return it full. Refuelling charges at the desk are much higher than pump prices, so fill up yourself.
- There are several large petrol stations on Route 402 in Thalang, a few kilometres before the airport junction.
- Fill up as close to the airport as you can, so the gauge still reads full on return.
- Keep the receipt – staff may ask for it, and it settles any question about the fuel level.
- Check the fuel type on the inside of the fuel flap (usually Gasohol 91/95 or diesel).
Returning your rental car at HKT
- Follow the "Car Rental Return" signs on the airport approach road – the return area is next to the terminal car parks.
- Park in your supplier's marked bays if you see them; otherwise park in the return area and find a staff member.
- Take everything out of the car – check the boot, door pockets, glovebox and under the seats.
- Photograph the fuel gauge, the mileage and all four sides of the car, including the wheels.
- Wait for the staff inspection and ask for a signed return slip before you walk to check-in.
Allow about 30 minutes for the whole return, more in high season when several flights leave at once. The deposit is released to your card after the check, which can take a few working days to show on your statement.
Early-morning and late-night flights
Roads are quiet before 6 a.m., so the drive is quicker – but rental desks may not be staffed. Ask your supplier in advance how out-of-hours returns work: most use a key drop box and a photo check, and some charge an out-of-hours fee. Take extra photos of the car and fuel gauge, because nobody inspects it with you.
The same applies to late-evening pick-ups. If your flight lands after 10 p.m., choose a supplier whose desk is open late, add your flight number to the booking and keep the supplier's phone number to hand.
Other ways to the airport
If you return the car early – for example at the end of a Krabi road trip – there are other options for the last leg:
- Phuket Smart Bus runs along the west coast between Rawai and the airport with stops at the main beaches.
- Airport buses connect the airport with Phuket Town.
- Taxis and ride-hailing apps are available everywhere but cost much more than a day of car hire from the southern beaches.
For most visitors, keeping the car until the flight is the simplest and cheapest choice.
Checklist for the day you fly
- Check the flight time and terminal (International or Domestic).
- Work out your departure time with the formula above, then add a buffer.
- Pack the car the night before so nothing is left behind.
- Fill the tank near the airport and keep the receipt.
- Photograph the car at return and keep the signed return slip.
- Keep your rental contract until the deposit has been released.
